Ring Bearer storytelling album layout, originally uploaded by Neil Cowley.
In this 4 image layout showcasing the ring bearer delivering the rings and the ring exchange by the Bride and Groom the layout highlights the action captured by the two photographer perspective.
Photographer 1 captures the ring bearer in action as he steps forward and reaches into his pocket. Photographer 2 captures close-up framings of the ring coming out of his pocket and ending up on the bride’s finger.

The next page turn reveals the groom’s expression and the bride’s responses during the ring exchange.

In this simple two image page layout, I added a dynamic element to the interplay of the two images by using two elements:
- A full page texture, which I call a ‘lighting overlay’ placed in Overlay Blend Mode
- The second, horizontal image is placed on the dark brown background in Lighten Blend Mode.
The Overlay texture has the effect of a full page vignette and makes those lightening markings between the photos. The Lighting Overlay Textures are available for purchase at MakeLightReal.com. The Texture pulls the two images together on the page, whereas the washed out effect of the photo in lighten blend mode might otherwise stick out.
The storyline in the album design is finished with this spread, as here is the previous page in the design for you to see the elements collide in the last spread.

Simple storytelling in wedding album design, originally uploaded by Neil Cowley.
Simple visual storytelling in a no-frills layout design pairs three similar photos together for a very elegant, natural ending to the wedding day. Again portrayed visually by varying the widths of the image and changing the angles in the frame. Notice that the cropped frames on the page keep the bright spot out, except in the final resting image where both the bride and groom are at rest.
This freehand layout is very simple to execute while working in inDesign – simply choose your series of photos from your library of candidates and drag them onto the stage. Slide the frames to fit your page. Command+2 to fit your image to frame proportionally if you are using our recommended keyboard shortcuts. Allow your mouse to follow your eye in shortening frames to ‘increase’ the visual ‘velocity’ and highlight one at the largest width, and set your pace-left to right-and don’t feel like it has to be a consistent pace.

In this horizontal spread, I cropped the images in a tight panoramic 1:5 format to show the tight moments of the bride and groom placing the rings on each other’s fingers. The tight spacing and blurred edges allow for a quick ‘read’ of the eye across the page and back – that emphasis is heightened by the horizontal bars of color running through the background of the image. Those lines were drawn from the implied continuation of line I ‘felt’ between the photos after laying them out.
